Part Five: The Shadow Who Smiled and the Girl Who Smiled Back — Chapter XII
Overview
At Henry’s birthday show, Addie’s curse resurfaces painfully as Bea and Robbie fail to remember her yet again, despite repeated meetings. The night turns when opening act Toby Marsh—someone from Addie’s past—performs a song tied to her, triggering a cascade of memories that drives Addie outside in tears. Addie returns with Henry, but the reset is complete, forcing Henry to introduce her all over again and underscoring how fragile this new life with him remains.
Summary
On June 13, 2014, Addie and Henry walk arm in arm to the Knitting Factory in Williamsburg to celebrate Henry’s twenty-ninth birthday. Henry asks about Addie’s birthday, regrets missing it, and Addie brushes it off, though Henry’s sadness lingers beneath the joke.
Inside, Henry’s friends Bea and Robbie greet him loudly and immediately fixate on Addie, even though Addie has met them many times already. Addie feels the familiar grind of the curse—endless introductions and resets—while Henry looks increasingly bothered by it. When Robbie goes to get drinks, Henry insists on doing it himself, trying to prevent another “start over.”
As they talk, an announcer introduces a special opening act: Toby Marsh. Addie is jolted by recognition, and as Toby plays and sings a song about loving a girl he has “never met” and fearing he will forget her, Addie is flooded with memories of their past and the way her life layers over itself like a palimpsest.
Overwhelmed, Addie leaves the venue to breathe, crying in the night air. Henry follows and asks what is wrong, whether Addie knows Toby, and whether she still has feelings for him. Addie admits she knew Toby but denies it is love, explaining only that the moment caught her off guard.
Addie and Henry go back inside, where the scene has effectively rewound: Bea and Robbie are chatting as if nothing happened and do not recognize Addie. Henry wraps an arm around Addie and introduces her again, and Bea repeats, with bright certainty, that they have been “dying to meet” her.
