Part Seven: I Remember You — Chapter III
Overview
Addie finds Henry’s published manuscript prominently displayed in a London bookstore and is shaken by the dedication, “I remember you,” which confirms her story can now persist beyond her curse. Luc appears and accepts the book’s existence, satisfied that the world can have the story as long as he has Addie. Addie privately realizes her bargain contains a loophole and decides to patiently maneuver Luc into abandoning her so she can regain her freedom.
Summary
In London in early 2016, Addie LaRue lingers in a bookstore as it prepares to close, listening while staff and customers discuss a new novel and speculate about its nameless author. She is drawn to a prominent display bearing the title The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, repeated across an entire shelf.
Addie studies the cover, recognizing Henry’s handwriting style and the deliberate absence of any author name or photo. When she opens the book, she finds the dedication—I remember you—and is overwhelmed by memories of Henry: meeting him at the bookstore, his steady remembering, their time together, and the final night when she was able to say a true good-bye.
As Addie begins to read her own story, she senses a shift in the air behind her and hears her name spoken aloud. Luc appears, wraps his arms around her, and calmly admires the book’s cleverness, claiming the public can have the story “so long as I have you.”
While Luc gloats, Addie privately measures him and the long history between them, realizing he has underestimated her. She focuses on a crucial loophole in the bargain’s wording: she promised to stay by Luc’s side as long as he wants her, not forever.
Addie resolves to play a patient, deliberate game—prove Luc is incapable of love, break his heart, and push him to cast her off so she can finally be free. Outwardly she reveals nothing, simply smiles, returns the book to the shelf, and follows Luc into the dark.
