Part Six: Do Not Pretend that This is Love — Chapter XIII
Overview
Luc takes Addie to a secret rooftop club above Manhattan, where she tries again to bargain for Henry Strauss’s freedom. Luc forces Addie to confront the cost of salvation by offering to spare Henry only if Addie damns an innocent stranger instead. When Addie finally points someone out, Luc laughs at what it reveals about her—and then abruptly transports her into a dark void and leaves her alone in the woods.
Summary
Addie and Luc leave their tense dinner behind and walk through a warm New York night. As they move uptown, Addie feels past centuries folding over the present—memories of cities and moments shared with Luc—while she tries not to think about how Luc’s earlier “word” ruined her chance to save Henry.
Addie asks for the best view, and Luc leads her to a hidden rooftop bar eighty-four stories up. Access requires Luc’s black key card and a second elevator styled like Rodin’s Gates of Hell. The bar, THE LOW ROAD, is filled with elite patrons, and the hostess, Renee, recognizes Luc as “Mr. Green” and brings Champagne from his private case.
With the city spread beneath them, Addie finally presses her plea: Luc must let Henry Strauss go. Luc demands to know why Henry matters, dismissing Henry as suicidal and weak, but Addie argues that humans are complicated and feeling, and that Henry is searching rather than doomed. Addie admits the painful truth that she may no longer fully be human, yet she still remembers what it was like to need a chance to live.
Luc counters that he trades in souls, not second chances, and offers Addie a bargain of cruelty: if she wants Henry freed, she must pick someone else on the roof to take his place. Addie hesitates, then points at a man in the crowd, sickened by what she is being asked to do.
Instead of collecting the chosen soul, Luc laughs and tells Addie she has changed more than she realizes. When Addie demands no more games, Luc agrees—and abruptly drags her into darkness. A moment later, the rooftop, the city, and all sound vanish, and Addie finds herself alone in silent woods.
