Part Three: Three Hundred Years—and Three Words — Chapter X
Overview
Addie experiences a rare, fragile taste of normalcy at Bea’s dinner party, but the curse’s effects and Robbie’s hostility threaten the illusion. When Robbie misnames Addie and storms out, Addie leaves before the night can collapse completely—only for Henry to follow her into the cold.
Outside, Addie identifies Robbie’s jealousy as unrequited love for Henry, and Henry admits he cannot love Robbie back. Addie senses Henry is hiding something deeper, glimpsing his sadness as they end the night together at his door.
Summary
Addie attends a dinner party at Bea’s apartment with Henry and their friends Josh, Elise, and Robbie, and for a while it feels miraculously normal. She talks art with Bea, Paris with Josh, and wine with Elise, while Henry quietly touches her knee under the table, and Addie tries to savor the warmth before it disappears.
Small cracks show when Elise briefly leaves and returns with a flicker of confusion, as if Addie’s presence has slipped from her mind and she is blaming the feeling on drink. Robbie grows increasingly restless and unhappy, drinking too quickly and fishing for attention, until he pointedly asks Addie’s name and calls her “Andy.” Addie tries to correct him, but the curse tightens and blocks the words; Henry says her name for her and calls Robbie out.
The tension escalates when Elise praises dessert and Henry credits Addie, which pushes Robbie over the edge. Robbie storms off for a smoke, and Josh follows. Addie, certain the spell of the evening is breaking and that once she leaves sight she will be forgotten, decides to go despite Bea’s objections.
Outside in the cold, Addie regrets not asking Henry to come with her, but she refuses to make him choose between his rooted life and her drifting one. Hearing footsteps, she expects Luc, but it is Henry, who followed her out.
As they walk, Henry apologizes for Robbie, and Addie recognizes Robbie’s behavior as lovesickness. Addie tells Henry that Robbie is still in love with him; Henry admits he knows, but cannot return it. Addie presses Henry for any other truth he wants to share, glimpsing a flash of deep sadness in him before he deflects with humor. They keep walking until they reach Henry’s blue door, and Addie—exhausted and comforted by his presence—does not want to leave, while Henry does not ask her to.
