Summary
Evelyn phones Celia and confesses she no longer loves Max. Celia resists, citing the risks of exposure and careers built on public assumptions, but Evelyn insists the world has changed and declares she no longer cares about protecting her image. After an emotional back-and-forth about lingering feelings, Celia agrees to meet for dinner in Los Angeles the following week.
On the morning of her trip, Evelyn leaves Max sleeping, debates whether to bring Celia’s saved letters, and decides to leave them behind. She says goodbye to Connor, who is headed to stay with Harry. At the last moment, fearing she might return from Los Angeles heartbroken, Evelyn runs back to get the letters.
Connor mentions Max is awake. Evelyn reaches the bedroom to find Max in the closet with Celia’s letters strewn about. He taunts her about infidelity and hurls a slur, pressing her to admit what the letters mean. Evelyn refuses to lie, acknowledges she was going to see Celia, and says she intends to leave him, affirming that she has always loved Celia. She challenges his claim to love, accusing him of possession rather than genuine affection.
As the phone rings with her waiting car, Max blocks the door and warns he can ruin her by exposing the letters. Evelyn recognizes the threat but remains resolute, stating she will leave now or later regardless. She shoves past him and walks out, determined to go to Celia and reclaim the love of her life despite the risks.
