Chapter 14
Contains spoilersOverview
Monique postpones telling her editor about the project while Evelyn signals growing media interest with a cover inquiry. At home, Monique receives her late father’s photo albums, prompting reflections on her identity, career purpose, and name. Recentered by her parents’ legacy, she returns to resume Evelyn’s story at Little Women.
Summary
After a long day, Monique packs up at Evelyn’s and learns that Evelyn’s publicist received an email from Monique’s editor, Frankie, about a June cover photo shoot. Monique admits she hasn’t told her editors the plan. Evelyn withholds judgment, telling Monique to do what she needs, and they agree to continue the next day.
At home, Monique finds a heavy package from her mother containing her late father James Grant’s photo albums. Paging through on-set candids, she recalls his love of photographing people unguarded and remembers his advice to choose work that makes her heart feel big. She tracks how following that guidance led her from school to journalism and eventually to Evelyn’s interview.
Monique discovers family photos from a barbecue, including one of herself with both parents. The images prompt reflections on growing up biracial—James Black and Angela white—frequent moves to find belonging, and an early friend who was also “half.” She recalls becoming “Monique” after her father’s death, honoring the name he used for her, and, looking at the photo, feels whole and loved despite loss.
Returning to Evelyn’s, Monique settles into her now-familiar spot at the desk, fortified by routine and Grace’s morning coffee. She cues Evelyn to resume, setting the stage to begin the Little Women chapter. Evelyn laughs at Monique’s efficiency as the interview continues.
