Summary
On the set of Theresa’s Wisdom, Evelyn presses Harry to join her and Celia in Europe for a quieter life, but Harry resists, insisting he isn’t living a lie and questioning uprooting Connor. He reveals he has met a man he could love and proposes an alternate plan: move back to Los Angeles, remarry Evelyn, and have Celia marry his friend. Evelyn, burned out on acting and craving anonymity, pushes back; they agree to discuss it later on the way to the airport.
Production delays keep Evelyn in Los Angeles while Connor grows distant in New York. After wrap, Evelyn plans to pick Harry up for their red-eye. During the drive with a new chauffeur, Nick, Evelyn reflects on safety and the family’s future.
Turning onto Harry’s street, they find a sedan wrapped around a fallen tree. Evelyn and Nick break in, pull a bleeding, semi-conscious Harry from the driver’s seat, and see a younger man in the passenger seat who is already dead. Smelling bourbon on Harry and fearing prosecution and exposure, Evelyn prioritizes protecting Harry’s reputation and Connor: she and Nick move Harry into her car, reposition the dead man into the driver’s seat, wipe the sedan of Harry’s traces, and then rush Harry to the hospital before anonymously reporting the crash.
At the hospital, Evelyn bribes staff to secure privacy and discards her bloodstained clothes. A doctor reports Harry’s femoral artery is severed and that he will not survive. Evelyn lies beside him, says goodbye, and affirms their bond and his importance to Connor. Harry dies an hour later, ending the possibility of their reformed family and his new love.
The next morning, Nick calls as instructed and demands to be made famous in exchange for silence. Though disgusted, Evelyn arranges for Nick to be poached by her agent and cast in a major action film, acknowledging the ruthless mix of luck and audacity Harry taught her. Alone in her hotel, she breaks down, mourning Harry—the man who created her career, gave her family, and loved her unconditionally—while confronting the moral cost of the cover-up and the collapse of their plans.
