Chapter Forty-Nine: Holden

Contains spoilers

Overview

Holden’s crew confirms Eros can maneuver with immense, but still physical, efficiency and then watches it accelerate sunward and vanish from radar. Forced into a visual chase, Holden recruits UNN Captain McBride’s Ravi to follow. Fred Johnson proposes remotely detonating Eros’ surface nukes via Miller, who reveals he’s still on Eros.

Summary

After Eros sidesteps the Nauvoo, the Rocinante confirms the asteroid jumped two hundred kilometers in under a minute. Amos and Naomi reel, but Holden takes command. Naomi estimates the maneuver’s waste heat at roughly ten exajoules, reassuring Holden that the protomolecule obeys physics, not magic, despite its extraordinary efficiency.

Eros begins moving sunward. Holden orders the Roci to maintain distance, but the rock suddenly disappears from radar while remaining visible optically and thermally, and its eerie radio babble persists. The Roci pursues under rising g-load, keeping Eros in sight as it continues to accelerate.

Holden hails a nearby UNN corvette. Captain McBride of the Ravi takes the line and, after deliberation, agrees to accompany the Roci and keep command informed, reducing the risk of friendly fire while they gather intel during the chase.

Holden then contacts Fred Johnson. Concluding Eros is likely headed toward Earth, they acknowledge the stakes. Fred suggests remotely detonating the surface nukes to deflect Eros. Despite proximity fuses, Fred insists Miller has remote codes. As Alex pushes more juice to keep up, Holden calls Miller—who reveals he is still on Eros, holding the keys to the plan.

Who Appears

  • James Holden
Rocinante captain; organizes the chase, coordinates with UNN Ravi and Fred, and seeks Miller’s codes to detonate Eros’ surface nukes.
  • Naomi Nagata
Exec/engineer; calculates Eros’ waste heat, confirming physics apply; manages comms and helps determine Eros’ sunward course.
  • Alex Kamal
Pilot; keeps Roci on Eros despite radar loss, manages acceleration and juice, tracks movement and course.
  • Amos Burton
Mechanic; reacts to Eros’ maneuver, assesses energy implications, and returns to engineering under Holden’s orders.
  • Captain McBride
UNN Ravi commander; decides to shadow the Rocinante and inform fleet command during the pursuit of Eros.
  • Fred Johnson
Tycho leader; coordinates political response, proposes remotely detonating Eros’ surface nukes using Miller’s codes.
  • Josephus Miller
Ex-detective; holds the remote detonation codes and reveals he remained on Eros.
