Chapter Thirty-Seven: Holden
Contains spoilersOverview
The Rocinante crew share a rare, calming meal, during which Naomi advances a key theory: the protomolecule seeks biomass to distribute computation and complete its purpose. They dock at Tycho and brief Fred Johnson, proposing an OPA strike on Protogen’s observation post. Holden refuses to surrender the research safe, and Fred signals cautious support.
Summary
Running at reduced thrust, the Rocinante crew pause for a homemade dinner that eases tension. Miller entertains with a story, and the group debates Belter–inner divides. Naomi argues that the protomolecule’s transformations seem intentional but unfinished, proposing it requires massive biomass to distribute computation and reach its designed goal—making Eros a controlled test site.
Holden connects the logic to the ongoing war, suggesting Eros could be destroyed if the experiment escapes control. The crew recoil at the moral cost, but accept the strategic reasoning. Miller vows to confront Protogen’s Mr. Dresden if they find him.
They arrive at Tycho Station, where Holden worries about the risk of bringing the research safe aboard. As Alex docks, Miller and Holden discuss trusting Fred Johnson, with Holden judging Fred the “least wrong” option despite OPA politics.
In Fred’s office, after taking their radiation meds, Holden and Miller present the Eros evidence and Naomi’s computation theory. Fred balks at the atrocity’s scale, but Miller insists motive is irrelevant: Protogen must be stopped. They propose locating Protogen’s observation station and redirecting OPA fighters to attack it.
Fred probes logistics and control of the evidence. Holden insists on retaining the captain’s safe, arguing no one can be trusted with it and hinting at contingencies. Fred concedes—grudgingly accepting Holden’s terms—while offering cautious, implicit support for an OPA strike on Protogen.
Who Appears
- James Holden

- Naomi Nagata
Engineer; articulates the key hypothesis that the protomolecule needs biomass to distribute computation.
- Josephus Miller
Ex-detective; bonds with crew, pushes for action against Protogen, and supports the plan to strike their station.
- Fred Johnson
OPA leader; hears the briefing, challenges the atrocity’s logic, then cautiously backs a strike while letting Holden keep the safe.
- Alex Kamal
Pilot; manages docking at Tycho and joins the discussion about Belter–inner differences and the protomolecule.
- Amos Burton
Mechanic; provides levity at dinner, questions the motives behind Eros, and reacts to Naomi’s theory.
