Chapter Forty-Three: Holden
Contains spoilersOverview
On Tycho, the Rocinante nears completion under Sam’s lead as Earth and Mars edge toward open war. Miller visits Holden to justify shooting Dresden, but Holden rejects him, severing trust. Seeking purpose and connection, Holden meets Naomi; they choose to start a relationship as the next moves approach.
Summary
Sam, the Tycho mechanic leading the Rocinante’s repairs, finishes sealing a galley bulkhead while trading easy camaraderie with Naomi. She reports the ship is close to perfect, and Naomi and Sam plan to play Golgo with Tycho coworkers. Holden appreciates the work but feels uneasy about how easily life on Tycho can feel normal.
In his quarters, Holden reflects on the escalating Earth–Mars crisis, Eros’ mass death, and the alien protomolecule. Restless and unable to stomach war speculation feeds, he’s interrupted by Miller, who arrives uninvited. Holden confronts Miller for executing Dresden despite Holden’s ultimatum.
Miller says he acted because Dresden would have gotten away with it—too powerful, and already persuading them that mass murder served a higher cause. Holden rejects this justification, saying he can’t trust Miller around his crew. Miller leaves, saddened but accepting.
Shaken, Holden calls Naomi and meets her at a Tycho bar. He confesses his need for a meaningful win after so many losses; Naomi calls him righteous and steadies him. She then cuts through his hesitation, telling him it’s “a yes or no question.” He says yes, and they choose to be together as the ship nears readiness and the war grows nearer.
