Summary
- After a typhoon, Culum finds his father's body in the rubble of the Noble House holding a small Chinese girl
- Culum and Tess leave the Valley of Happiness and walk down the Queen's Road, passing through the ruined new city
- People are repairing homes and shops, while others are fishing or trading
- Smoke rises from the Tai Ping Shan Hill, mainly from taverns, Tea Houses, and food vendors
- Skinner tells Tess and Culum that the White Witch has been seized by the authorities and all Europeans found on the streets are being arrested
- Skinner advises Tess and Culum to hide in the Noble House until the situation calms down
- Culum goes to the Boston Princess and finds Mauss dead in a room, then returns to Shevaun and Cooper
- Shevaun and Cooper discuss the future of the Noble House and decide that Shevaun will return to the United States for a year
- Cooper thinks about merging their two companies and becoming the Tai-Pan of the Noble House.
