Chapter 12: Lyria
Contains spoilersOverview
During a Red Hand assault on Camp 121, Lyria loses her brother, leaves her disabled father behind, and rescues her nephew Liam from the infirmary. She fails to link up with her sister, witnesses fleeing Gammas ambushed at the jungle edge, and hides in the dump as fire encroaches, underscoring the Republic’s absence and escalating peril.
Summary
Lyria flees gunfire after her brother Tiran is killed and rushes home through chaos as Red Hand forces spread across Camp 121. She tells her sister Ava, and together they decide to evacuate. Realizing their father cannot be moved through mud and gunfire, Lyria shares a painful farewell and sends Ava with the children toward the north watchtower and the river.
Determined to retrieve her nephew, Lyria runs to the infirmary. Janis, the Yellow in charge, lets her in; Lyria gathers the sightless Liam despite Janis’s plea to shelter in place. Lyria carries Liam back into the camp’s darkness, aiming for the agreed rendezvous at the north watchtower.
The tower is abandoned; the Republic soldiers have fled, and Ava is not there. Pursued by Red Hand boys, Lyria ducks into the dumpsite and hides beneath scrap. From cover, she watches a stream of Gammas flee toward the jungle, only to be ambushed by Red Hand fighters lurking at the treeline, cutting them down with slingBlades.
Clinging to Liam, Lyria quiets and comforts him, gives him saved chocolate, and notices another family hiding nearby, which briefly restores hope. As the raiders sweep the area and the night fills with screams and gunfire, the scent of spreading fire reaches their refuge, tightening the noose around them.
