Chapter 29: Lyria

Contains spoilers

Overview

Lyria ventures into Hyperion on leave, is falsely accused of theft by a Gold, and is roughly detained by Watchmen as tensions with onlookers rise. A limping former Watchman, Philippe, vouches for her and secures her release. He then shows her the city; they share personal losses, and Lyria ends the day with her first true friend on Luna.

Summary

On her leave day, Lyria travels from the Telemanus Citadel into Hyperion, feeling small amid the crowds and costs. She explores the museum, lingering uneasily in the Hall of Screams, where Red sigils memorialize the mines. Overwhelmed, she exits to the steps outside.

There, Gold Agilla au Vorelius accuses Lyria of stealing a bracelet. A Silver bystander grabs Lyria and a Green supports the claim. Watchmen Stefano Gregorovich and Rico arrive, scan Lyria, draw a gun when she reaches for identification, and cuff her as a crowd—some Vox watchers—gathers. Agilla threatens to use connections; a wagon is called, and unrest brews.

As Lyria is loaded into the wagon, a limping Gray, Philippe, intervenes. Speaking as a former Watchman and veteran, he bonds with Stefano and argues that arresting Lyria will spark trouble. Stefano releases Lyria, the crowd disperses, and the crisis passes.

Philippe proposes they walk the city. They visit galleries, the zoo, and parks; he buys snacks and dinner at a Venusian restaurant. Conversation ranges from the Peace and politics to Lyria’s simple wish for the war to end, revealing her skepticism of leaders and empathy for Dancer.

At Hero Center, Philippe shows a Bacchus pendant tied to his deceased husband, exposing his grief. Lyria, feeling understood, shares her family’s deaths on Mars and her rescue of her nephew. They study the Iron Reaper statue and trade quiet reflections on symbols, loss, and silence.

Philippe escorts Lyria to the station and urges her to see her own worth. Lyria returns to the Citadel exhausted but heartened, grateful for a new friend and a brief sense of belonging in Luna’s vast city.
