Chapter 43: Lyria
Contains spoilersOverview
Lyria escapes Obsidian hunters through Hyperion’s undercity, surviving predation, injury, and a first violent defense. After witnessing the hunters’ brutality, she rejects disappearing and instead surrenders to Watchmen at a Promenade checkpoint. Her choice signals a pivot toward confronting the conspiracy and rescuing the kidnapped children despite personal risk.
Summary
Lyria flees three white-haired, black-clad Obsidians in an industrial tower, diving into a ventilation duct to survive. The fall shreds her hands and dislocates her shoulder, but she escapes into the rain-soaked streets with a pistol taken from outside Philippe’s car. Hiding in a dumpster, she wrestles with guilt over Kavax’s death and the stolen children, then forces herself to move.
Searching for a way up, Lyria stumbles into a tent city of Mars Reds who try to prey on her. When a man lunges from behind, she fires, silently severing his leg and sending the others scattering. Horrified by the injury and her own rage, she flees and vomits, discarding the gun—then reclaims it after seeing the dangers around her.
From an alley, Lyria watches a young Obsidian hop off a hoverbike, finish a harpooned victim with a hammer, and roar away dragging the body. Realizing the streets will kill her, she climbs onto an abandoned tramline to slip past searching bikes, then finds an unguarded stairwell and begins the long ascent through grim levels toward the brighter Promenade tiers.
As she climbs, Lyria avoids guarded lifts and Watchmen, haunted by memories of family, camp, and the mothers whose children were taken. She considers disappearing into the city but rejects it, driven by anger at those who destroy families and by her promise to protect Liam. Determined to face the danger, she approaches the Promenade checkpoint.
At the fence, Lyria raises her hands. A scanner alarms for her pistol. Watchmen level rifles and order her to her knees. Lyria chooses to surrender, risking arrest to expose the plot and try to save Pax and the girl.
