9. Aly
Overview
Summary
Aly stitches up the Faceless Man's hand at her dining table, mortified that she stabbed him during oral sex. He refuses a hospital visit and a plastic surgeon, claiming he'll wear her mark proudly. Aly secretly stashes a gauze sample of his blood in her freezer as insurance in case he turns out to be dangerous. Her cat Fred bonds suspiciously with the masked stranger, sitting in his lap and following him around.
Despite her exhaustion and lingering arousal, Aly tries to initiate sex again, but the Faceless Man firmly redirects her to bed, bumps his masked forehead against hers, and leaves. Aly reflects on her attraction to him, acknowledging the small percentage of danger only adds to her excitement, and entertains the idea of turning the tables by identifying him and planting cameras in his home.
Twelve hours later, Aly wakes to discover signs he returned while she slept: fresh pancakes from her favorite bakery in her fridge, a gap in her security camera footage (he hacked them again), and her driveway and walk completely shoveled out after a foot of snow. Her elderly neighbor Wendy gushes about the handsome man who shoveled for her, claiming he said they'd had a tiff and he was making amends.
Aly texts the Faceless Man to scold him; their flirtatious banter continues, including him claiming his stitches show signs of infection before revealing he was joking. He admits he likes taking care of her. Then Tyler texts asking Aly to come talk to his roommate Josh in half an hour—Josh will be alone. Aly grins, viewing this as the first step toward unmasking the Faceless Man, unaware Josh is him.
