Chapter II: Unwelcome Guests
Contains spoilersOverview
Gabriel, Greyhand, Talon, and Aaron arrive at the city of Coste on the eve of the Feast of San Maximille to lay a trap for the Raven Child. They seek entry to Château de Coste to blend with the nobles, prompting a tense reunion between Aaron and his mother and open hostility from his stepfather, the Baron de Coste. Despite the Baron’s contempt for halfbreeds and Aaron, the hunters warn of a vampire threat and are grudgingly admitted. The chapter sets the stage for the hunt within the Baron's feast.
Summary
Gabriel narrates the party’s arrival in the grand city of Coste at dusk, describing its wealth, the waterfall that divides it, and the festive atmosphere for the Feast of Maximille the Martyr. He explains the holiday’s origins and notes the difficulty of finding a hidden vampire in such a large, celebrating crowd.
As they climb toward the keep, Aaron conceals his face, wary of recognition. Gabriel and Aaron trade barbs, their distrust simmering beneath Greyhand’s reminder that they are on Hunt. Gabriel questions their conspicuous attire, and Talon agrees, prompting Aaron to suggest borrowing suitable clothes from the household, which requires speaking to his family.
At the keep, Capitaine Daniau recognizes Aaron and, after initial reluctance, is compelled by Aaron’s noble authority to summon Aaron’s mother and set extra watches, as Aaron warns of mortal peril without silver’s protection. Gabriel observes Aaron’s seamless return to his nobleson persona and resents his arrogance and class entitlement.
Inside the opulent hall, Aaron is warmly embraced by his mother, the Baronne de Coste, who welcomes his comrades. The reunion is interrupted by the arrival of the Baron de Coste, whose appearance and demeanor mark him as a functioning drunk and an authoritarian presence. He derides Aaron as a bastard and insults the halfbreed hunters, making clear his contempt.
Greyhand and Talon attempt diplomacy, but the Baron remains hostile until Aaron states their purpose: they have tracked an ancien vampire for months who may attend the feast. The Baronne visibly tenses at the mention of danger, while the Baron dismisses Aaron’s lineage by referencing Aaron’s vampiric father’s death. Aaron insists the threat is a murderous woman who could endanger the guests, including his mother.
Gabriel notes that Aaron’s proud posture masks fear and deep-seated hatred of his stepfather. After assessing them with cold disdain, the Baron finally agrees to let them in, setting the scene for a perilous hunt amid the noble festivities.
