Chapter V: The Age of the Fall
Contains spoilersOverview
Gabriel de León, Aaron de Coste, Greyhand, and Talon track Marianne Luncóit to an estate on Silver Lane, then pursue her to the Falls Bridge during the Feast. They confront Luncóit and her child Adrien amid fleeing revelers, where a brutal battle erupts. Aaron and Gabriel together cast Adrien into the river, where running water destroys him, but Luncóit maims Greyhand, severing his sword arm and nearly killing him. In the aftermath, the hunters realize Luncóit is actually Laure Voss, an ancient Prince of Forever, and that her released white ravens have carried vital intelligence to a greater “Master.”
Summary
Gabriel narrates from a rooftop stakeout over Silver Lane with Aaron, watching a silent, dark estate they suspect houses Marianne Luncóit’s brood. Archer, Gabriel’s bird, watches nearby. Gabriel wrestles with guilt over disobeying Talon at the château and doubts about Aaron’s suspected betrayal, thanking Aaron for defending him from Greyhand.
Aaron doses sanctus and the team advances: Greyhand and Talon breach the estate while Gabriel and Aaron clear the upper floors. They subdue a powerful Sūdhaemi thrall in a study; under Aaron’s compulsion and Talon’s mind-probing, the thrall reveals the nest has moved to the Falls Bridge and babbles that a “Master” is coming. The four rush through festival crowds toward the river as snow falls.
On the Falls Bridge, they find Luncóit in red with her child Adrien, releasing white ravens bearing ribbon-tied messages westward. After driving off revelers amid clashes with thralls, the hunters confront the pair. Luncóit taunts them with their names and lineage, and Greyhand invokes holy light. Luncóit attacks with overwhelming speed and strength, while Adrien targets Aaron and Gabriel.
Adrien shoots Aaron and wounds Gabriel in a flurry; Aaron intervenes, guarding Gabriel with burning silversteel. Their duel rages as Greyhand and Talon battle Luncóit, trading blows with ignis and silverbombs. Luncóit wields a ripped-up brass angel statue as a weapon, smashing Talon and briefly felling Greyhand.
Adrien presses to kill Aaron, but Gabriel tackles him toward the railing. Aaron recovers his sword and, despite severe wounds, strikes Adrien into the river. Submerged in running water, Adrien disintegrates, screaming as he is swept over the falls and destroyed.
Luncóit howls for Adrien and, in a savage counterattack, mutilates Greyhand: she shatters his face, then tears off his sword arm and throws it into the river. Gabriel, Aaron, and a broken Talon regroup, unwilling to abandon Greyhand but clearly outmatched. Luncóit declares her supremacy as a Prince of Forever.
In a final, chilling reveal, the hunters understand that Luncóit is not merely an Ancien of Voss but Laure Voss herself, an ancient sovereign. The white ravens have already carried critical intelligence to a looming Master, and the “age of the fall” has begun, leaving the hunters shattered and their leader maimed on the bridge.
