Chapter 20

Overview

Carl and Donut finally rejoin Katia in the land quadrant and learn that the next castle can be taken in two radically different ways: flood Ghazi’s sandcastle and lose the likely chance to recover his winding box, or risk entering through a storm-powered magical doorway. The choice exposes a sharp conflict between cautious, prize-focused Katia and pragmatic, impatient Gwen, while Carl realizes his team has become capable without him. Just as Carl begins to unravel how the castle’s electrical mechanism really works, the storm activates the entrance and forces the assault to begin.

Summary

Carl and Donut return to Hump Town aboard the team’s battered flying house and find that Katia’s group has literally hacked the top half off to separate the stairwell from the structure. Firas explains that Katia briefly managed to store the entire house in her inventory before the game patched the exploit, and he updates Carl on recent events: the stairwell now sits separately in the desert, the Red Equinox weather shift is about to make conditions worse, and monsters trapped in the Nothing have started going feral. Louis urges everyone to move quickly before the next storm and before night brings more danger.

As they descend toward the land quadrant, Carl feels both proud and unsettled that Katia and the others have accomplished so much without him. That realization forces Carl to confront his own need to feel indispensable, along with painful memories of emotional abuse. Carl checks in on other crawler teams and learns that Bautista has cleared all four castles in his bubble at heavy cost, Li Jun and Li Na are nearing the end of theirs, Meadow Lark are improvising a solution for their final castle, Lucia Mar has suffered another mental collapse, Florin is nearly doomed, and Miriam Dom has been turned into a vampire. Firas also describes the land quadrant and confirms that the water-quadrant survivors, Vadim and Britney, dread returning to the depths.

On the beach, Carl and Donut reunite with Katia and meet Gwendolyn Duet, a hard-edged level-34 fighter who has been waiting impatiently for them. Katia jokes about Carl’s disappearance, mentions the humiliating sidekick show she was forced onto, and says they need Carl for the next step. Gwen immediately pushes them toward action, making it clear that Katia has delayed the assault for nearly a day and that time is running out before the weather changes.

While they march to the sandcastle, Gwen explains that the current plan is one Carl has not yet heard. In a private party chat, Katia lays out the conflict between her and Gwen. The castle of the Mad Dune Mage, Ghazi, is essentially a mass of sand around a buried stairwell, and Ghazi himself has become part of that sand while searching for the Gate of the Feral Gods. Gwen wants to use a drainage control hidden in the necropolis wall to unleash water through the structure and wash the castle away. That would be the easy solution, but Katia believes it would ruin Carl’s chance to recover Ghazi’s winding box. The harder plan requires using tower cables and a sandstorm lightning strike to energize the magical doorway, opening a temporary glass corridor into the castle. Louis and Firas remain outside partly to stop Gwen from flooding the castle while Carl’s group is inside.

At the castle entrance, Carl studies the setup and notices that one of the heavy electrical leads seems suspiciously redundant because the two towers are already connected overhead. He asks whether there are any other metal contacts nearby, and Tran, a swashbuckler with metal-detection abilities, reports that there may be a ring beneath the drainage wheel. Carl orders Tran to drag the extra cable toward that wheel, suspecting it has another purpose. Before Carl can test anything further, lightning crashes across the sky, the towers and doorway ignite with blue energy, and a dark hallway forms beyond the vanished door. Katia immediately shouts for everyone to move and charges inside.
