Chapter 25

Overview

Carl commits to the Akula dive because shutting off its pump is the only way to drain the necropolis and reach the final castle. The mission reveals more of Chris’s deception, since he lied about the escape tubes, and it also shows that Quetzalcoatlus’s ghost is haunting the submarine itself. What begins as a careful infiltration turns into an immediate disaster when Katia, covering the team from outside, is threatened by a colossal sea creature.

Summary

Carl tries to contact Henrik with the pocket watch alarm, but Henrik still does not answer, which makes Juice Box want to enter the dangerous area herself. At the same time, the tomb raider team inches through the half-flooded necropolis while Bobby struggles with the remaining traps. Carl also keeps working on the unresolved Chris-and-Maggie problem: he has Langley’s crew drag the stairwell house near Hump Town so Donut and Katia can potentially disable Chris’s rock form and throw Maggie through the portal if necessary, even though Carl thinks that would only unleash the parasite on the sixth floor. Despite those worries, Carl knows none of it matters unless the team can drain the water and reach the final castle, which means shutting off the pump inside the submarine.

In Pandinus, Carl meets with Donut, Katia, Gwen, Tran, and the two surviving crawlers from the water quadrant, Britney Proskurina and Vadim Zbar. Britney is too traumatized to return underwater, but Vadim volunteers and says he knows where the pump controls should be. The group also hears that Club Vanquisher is closed after Miriam Dom’s vampirism led Prepotente to unleash his hellspawn familiar inside, earning the trio a new bounty. Carl decides the underwater team will be Carl, Katia, Tran, and Vadim.

While preparing on the uprooted flying house, Donut fumes over insulting viewer comments, and the group readies chum bombs made from corpses and weakened explosives to lure away the concierge sharks guarding the submarine. Katia passes along gossip from Langley that makes Carl mistrust Vadim, but Carl proceeds because he needs Vadim’s knowledge of the Akula. Carl, Katia, and Donut also discuss an unsettling dungeon rule: female crawlers cannot conceive while in the crawl. Once Louis and Firas maneuver the house into position, the team drops the chum bombs, detonates them, and successfully creates a distraction; some sharks die in the blast, and Donut levels up to 38.

Katia then reshapes herself into a heavy diving bell and carries Carl, Tran, and Vadim down roughly 500 meters to the Akula. During the descent, Vadim explains that the submarine became flooded after the docked mini-sub exploded, and that the Akula itself is now acting as the mechanism pumping seawater into the necropolis. Katia spots non-hostile blue jellyfish near the torn-open superstructure, lands on the hull, and camouflages herself there while the three men enter the submarine. Inside the flooded corridors, Vadim recounts the water party’s earlier run: Chris slipped past a deadly sentinel gun alone, killed the boss, took the note with the escape-tube code, and then lied when he later claimed there had not been room for everyone to escape toward the land quadrant.

The team finds that a hatch Vadim left open is now closed, so Carl uses it as an airlock to reach a dry section of the submarine. After enduring the miserable transition from water-breathing to normal air, they enter the former sentinel-gun chamber, where Carl discovers the hidden loot box for the neighborhood boss and takes the full map of the Akula. The map reveals multiple enemies, many corpses, and a moving ghost crossing between the bridge and the outside. Before Carl can fully explain, Quetzalcoatlus’s glowing ghostly head pushes through the bulkhead and unleashes a devastating shriek that nearly drops Vadim. At the same time, Katia reports that the same green ghost has flown outside, struck an enormous creature beneath the submarine, and vanished again. New music begins, signaling a major threat, and the chapter ends with Carl ordering Katia to flee just as the gigantic monster reaches for the sub.

Who Appears

  • Carl
Leads the Akula mission, weighs Chris’s fate, and discovers the ghostly threat inside the submarine.
  • Katia
Shapeshifts into a diving bell, delivers the team to the Akula, and faces a massive creature outside.
  • Donut
Helps plan the dive, detonates the chum bombs, levels up, and stays above to guard the mission.
  • Vadim Zbar
Water-quadrant survivor who guides the team through the Akula and reveals Chris lied about the escape route.
  • Tran
Swashbuckler who joins Carl underwater, navigates with Pathfinder, and helps keep Vadim alive after the shriek.
  • Britney Proskurina
Traumatized survivor who refuses to reenter the water but provides context for the earlier Akula disaster.
  • Chris
Absent but central figure whose earlier actions in the Akula and current possession by Maggie shape Carl’s choices.
  • Quetzalcoatlus
Ghostly pterodactyl whose scream attacks the team and whose appearance precedes a larger underwater threat.
