Chapter 26
Overview
Racing to the Akula’s bridge as the submarine is dragged into the deep, Carl loots Henrik’s corpse and finds a journal page revealing that Quetzalcoatlus is a Wailing Shrieker and that the changelings were trying to give the ghost flesh rather than simply kill her. Before Carl can escape, the administrators turn the attack into a live special event and reveal Lusca, a level 82 sharktopus city boss, as the true threat. Lusca swallows and snaps the submarine in half, trapping Carl, Katia, Tran, and Vadim in her mouth with only ten minutes before her brood and then Lusca finish eating them.
Summary
As boss music suddenly starts and the Akula shakes under an external attack, Carl pushes into the bridge because he realizes Henrik and the changeling principals must have come here before dying. Carl messages Katia, learns Katia fled deeper into the submarine instead of escaping, and tells Katia to reach the bridge. While Carl, Tran, and Vadim struggle to stay upright, the submarine is dragged free of the necropolis and pulled rapidly down into the deep.
Inside the bridge, Carl spots Henrik’s corpse and loots it, taking Henrik’s body, the mysterious watch, and a torn book page. The system briefly freezes, and Carl receives a half-seen administrative notice showing that multiple plaintiffs tried to lock down items in his inventory, only for the court to dismiss the challenge immediately. The Akula then settles on the seafloor around 1,500 meters down, and Carl realizes the huge shape outside the window is not darkness but a tentacled creature covering the port.
After Katia reaches the bridge, Carl reads the torn journal page from Henrik’s inventory. The page explains that Quetzalcoatlus is a Wailing Shrieker, a ghost created from a grieving widow on hallowed ground, and that such ghosts can be countered by exorcism, destruction of the lover’s corpse, banishment, electricity, or flesh-giving magic. From this, Carl concludes Henrik’s team had not been trying to kill Quetzalcoatlus directly; they wanted to give the ghost flesh so they could physically affect her, but they failed and were killed instead. Carl checks on the approaching storm, sends urgent instructions to Gwen, and orders Katia, Tran, and Vadim to loot the other bodies and prepare to move toward the escape hatch.
Before they can leave, Carl and the others see a massive glowing shark-octopus hybrid approach the submarine. Time freezes again, and the administrators turn the encounter into a live special-event broadcast hosted by Kevin and Magnificent Troy, who reveal the attacker as Lusca, a level 82 city boss. Carl orders Donut and the others to set depth charges, land the house, and get everyone to safe rooms. When time resumes, Lusca swallows the Akula and bites it in half; another presentation explains that Lusca’s babies will feed on the trapped prey for ten minutes before Lusca eats what remains, leaving Carl’s group stuck in the monster’s mouth under a countdown.
