Chapter 18

Overview

Before a sponsored toy appearance, Carl and Donut are sent to an underwater trailer with Loita, whose anti-human tirade reveals that Zev was forced back into line through pressure on her family. During the Veriluxx taping, Carl deliberately derails the commercial as cover for an attack that leaves Loita trapped, mutilated, and dead when the robot Donut explodes beside her. The chapter marks Carl’s first intentional blow against the dungeon’s handlers and turns his anger into a declared campaign of revenge.

Summary

Before the transfer to a sponsored appearance, Carl uses his sapper’s table to experiment with infused smoke curtains. One attempt fails, but another combines a smoke curtain with an invisibility potion and creates a new unstable item called a Hobgoblin Disco Ball. Robot Donut accidentally knocks it off the table, Carl steps on it, and the crafting room fills with blinding rainbow smoke, ruining Mordecai’s work and coating everyone in technicolor residue.

Carl and Donut are then sent with Loita to an underwater security trailer for a Veriluxx toy commercial. Carl notices that his menus are still blocked because Loita is present and questions how secure the trailer really is. Loita explains that the show will use holo versions of Donut and Mongo toys, then erupts into a hateful political rant about humans, calling their culture a contagion and revealing that Zev was brought back into line only after pressure and abuse were applied to her mother and aunts. Carl and Donut leave for the set angry and shaken by what Loita has said.

On the set, Carl and Donut meet the Forsoothed hosts, Gravo and Liddi, who explain that the commercial is a targeted ad for low-income families at fueling depots. Donut reads her lines without enthusiasm, and Carl deliberately stops following the script. He jokes that the robot Donut is more compliant than the real one, then pushes further by linking the product to Veritan, raising accusations about slavery and hidden trackers. Gravo tries to shut him down, but Carl keeps escalating, using the taping as cover while the robot sample remains in the green room with Loita.

The plan pays off when the trailer suddenly loses power and the fire suppression alarm sounds. Carl rushes back into the green room and finds the couch destroyed, the window cracked, and the forcefield barely holding the surrounding ocean back. Loita has been horribly maimed by an explosion from the robot Donut, and Carl realizes Borant cannot safely teleport her out without dropping the shield and killing Carl and Donut as well. Carl coolly blames the toy’s built-in self-destruct, watches Loita die after one last declaration that the Bloom will prevail, and silently credits Crawler Coolie’s earlier notes for giving him the knowledge and confidence to make this first strike.

In a later note, Carl directly addresses Coolie and says this attack was his first step in retaliating against the people running the crawl. He says he acted for Coolie and for Bonnie, but from this point forward he intends to fight for himself and for humanity. Carl ends the chapter with a vow that the Syndicate will not break him and with the single word counting the beginning of his campaign: One.
