Evie recounts her first job for Mr. Smith, assuming the alias Izzy Williams with a full disguise and fingerprint precautions. Over a week, she bonds with Miles, endures Jenny’s hostility, and struggles with guilt about what will happen once she completes the job.

On the eighth day, with Miles napping and Jenny bathing, Evie searches Jenny’s bedroom. She discovers a wall safe behind a family portrait. After two failed codes and a warning from Matt that the safe may lock out, Evie deduces 0704—likely tied to the couple’s Fourth of July memory—and opens it. She begins swapping the flash drive for a corrupted replica designed to disable any computer it touches.

Jenny, drunk and unsteady, catches Evie at the safe. When Jenny lunges, she trips on her robe sash, falls, and strikes her head, bleeding and unconscious. Matt orders Evie to flee with the drive. Torn about Miles, Evie secretly calls Greg to report Jenny’s fall and her own “family emergency,” then completes the swap, reseals the safe, and escapes as an ambulance and police arrive.

Evie delivers the flash drive to Matt at AAA Bail Bonds and is immediately put on the phone with Mr. Smith. She gives a full report. Mr. Smith acknowledges the successful theft but condemns her recklessness—calling for help, rushing, and letting Jenny approach. He insists she remember she is a ghost in others’ lives and must prioritize the job and survival. He pays her, orders relocation to avoid the Kingstons, and demands “no mistakes.” Evie resolves to be better and never get attached again.
