Evie begins moving into Ryan’s inherited home while vigilant neighbors note the change. When Evie says she gave away her furniture, Ryan cancels the movers and pushes an immediate pickup from her apartment. At Lake View, his protectiveness edges into probing as he searches through her things, while Evie maintains her careful narrative and clocks his Thursday secrecy.
Summary
Ryan’s grandfather left him a large, well-kept house and enough money for comfort, and Ryan moved in with few belongings. Evie backs into the driveway with boxes as neighbors Ben and Maggie Rogers watch. Ryan happily announces Evie is moving in, absorbing Maggie’s jab about “skipping steps,” and they accept an invitation for cocktails.
Inside, Evie says she brought clothes and shoes and mentions giving away all her furniture. Ryan looks disappointed until Evie explains those pieces meant nothing to her, unlike the meaningful items in his home. Ryan immediately cancels the scheduled movers and decides they should collect the rest of her things that night.
With the apartment office closed for the evening, they drive separately to Lake View. Ryan bristles at the complex’s condition and hustles inside, protective. As Evie packs books, Ryan examines her perfume bottles, asking about her collection; Evie offers a sparse, mostly truthful origin story, noting to herself what she withholds.
Ryan studies a selfie of them on her fridge, recalls the good night it captured, then clears the fridge and trash, even checking the bathroom for leftovers. He methodically searches drawers and cabinets, more thorough than Evie expected.
Back in the main room, Ryan peeks into—and then rifles through—several boxes, seeming to search for something. When Evie asks, he says he wants to learn everything about her, a statement that feels heavy. Evie registers both his protectiveness and scrutiny, and she notes again that Ryan remains tight-lipped about his Thursday activities.
