CHAPTER 56

Overview

Simone completes his formal recital program with Dr. Takai and returns for an encore: an original “Fado for Theo,” performed with Basil Cannonfield and Kendrick Whitaker as a public thank-you to Theo. After the ovation, Professor Gobelli invites Theo to the stage, where Theo reveals that Simone’s parents have been in the balcony all night and brings them forward. Theo and the Promenade friends then honor Simone with a newly unveiled portrait, turning the recital into a lasting tribute.

Summary

The second half of Simone’s recital opens with Dvo—8k’s “Lasst Mich Allein,” played with Dr. Takai, and continues through precise, heartfelt selections that end the formal program with Saint-Sans’s “The Swan.” Simone accepts the applause, bows, and leaves the stage, but the audience remains and calls for an encore.

Simone returns without his tuxedo jacket and, with faculty permission, speaks to the audience. He explains the Portuguese “fado” tradition and announces an original piece, “Fado for Theo,” composed as a gift to thank Theo for many kindnesses, including the Pernambuco bow. Theo, surprised and moved, instinctively takes Ellen’s and Lamisha’s hands.

Simone introduces his collaborators, Basil Cannonfield and Kendrick Whitaker, who join him onstage for guitar and vocals. The unusual trio performs the accessible tribute, and the audience responds enthusiastically, rising to cheer as they bow together.

Professor Gobelli then comes onstage to praise the evening and calls Theo forward. Theo hugs Simone and addresses the crowd, revealing that Simone’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lavoie, have been listening from the balcony the entire night; he invites them down to join the celebration.

Speaking on behalf of friends from the Promenade, Theo explains a plan to honor Simone early rather than at career’s end and presents a portrait. Asher steps up beside Simone and unveils a framed graphite-and-charcoal drawing of Simone absorbed in performance, capturing his face and left hand on the cello’s neck.
