CHAPTER 19
Overview
James Ponder quietly secures top-tier, consistent medical care for Lamisha by persuading pediatric orthopedic specialist Dr. Goodson Ikande to take her case under an anonymous benefactor arrangement. Theo learns Dr. Ikande is cautiously optimistic—Lamisha should keep her leg, though a limp is likely—while confidentiality is preserved for the Whitakers. Ponder also arranges paid leave for Lamisha’s grandmother through her employer, extending the practical support around the family.
Summary
Kendrick Whitaker arrives at Crossway Medical Center and, within minutes, meets a new physician in room 626. The doctor introduces himself as Goodson Ikande and tells Kendrick he will oversee Lamisha’s care for the rest of her treatment, warmly greeting Lamisha and asking her to call him “Dr. Good.”
The chapter then explains how the change happened: the day before, James Ponder called Dr. Ikande after getting his number from the hospital’s medical director. Ponder summarizes Lamisha’s accident, her mother’s death, her long hospitalization, and the disruptive turnover of multiple doctors.
Ponder asks Dr. Ikande to take Lamisha’s case, explaining that the family lacks private insurance and that a private, anonymous benefactor will cover all costs through Ponder’s office to avoid burdening the Whitakers with debt or obligation. Although Dr. Ikande finds the arrangement unusual, he agrees to consult the medical director.
Later that day, Dr. Ikande accepts the case, requests Lamisha’s records immediately, and schedules a meeting with the family; the next morning, between surgeries, he visits Lamisha as promised. Ponder then updates Theo: Dr. Ikande is an expert in pediatric orthopedic leg injuries, considers Lamisha’s condition serious but is cautiously optimistic, believes her previous care was subpar, expects a lifelong limp, and says there is no danger of losing the leg.
Theo confirms the arrangement will remain confidential, and Ponder assures him the Whitakers will only know a new doctor has taken over. Ponder also reports progress on helping Lamisha’s grandmother: her employer will give paid leave until Lamisha returns home, funded by an anonymous deposit from Theo’s side. Theo and Ponder acknowledge their growing partnership in doing discreet good for the family.
