Mid-morning at the Chalice, Asher Glissen walks in and, prompted by Shep, notices Theo studying one of the hanging portraits with intense focus. Seeing Theo’s absorbed attention feels like high praise to Asher, though Asher remains curious about the newcomer’s intentions.

Asher introduces himself and thanks Theo for buying several portraits. Theo, momentarily flustered and starstruck, returns the greeting warmly, saying he is an admirer of Asher’s work and that he has been acquiring the portraits “only to give them good homes.”

Asher identifies the portrait Theo is viewing as Lila, explaining she had just come from ballet practice when he photographed her. Theo compliments the portrait’s liveliness, saying even Lila’s eyes look full of dance, and asks if Asher has time to sit and visit.

Asher declines because he has an imminent meeting, but invites Theo to come by his studio the next day. They agree on a morning visit at nine, with Asher advising Theo to knock loudly because the door is usually locked while Asher works. Asher gives Theo directions and his phone number, and they part with well wishes.

Theo watches Asher leave, chat briefly with a young couple outside, and ride away on a bicycle with his coffee secured on the handlebars. After a couple of deep breaths, Theo leaves the shop, satisfied that his plan is unfolding exactly as he hoped.
