Chapter Twenty-Six
Overview
Shane and Ilya’s private happiness at the cottage is interrupted when Shane’s father unexpectedly catches them kissing on the deck. Forced into immediate damage control, Shane and Ilya go to Shane’s parents and Shane comes out, admitting he and Ilya have been secretly involved since before their rookie year. While the revelation shocks Shane’s parents, they respond with surprising acceptance and begin talking through the impossible reality of keeping the relationship secret and possible future plans.
Summary
At Shane’s cottage late in the morning, Ilya teases Shane about a filmed segment and then abruptly pushes Shane off the dock into the lake. They splash each other, laugh, and end up kissing in the water and against the dock, with Ilya escalating into a heated sexual moment on the dock despite Shane’s worries about being seen.
Afterward, they swim and head back toward the house. Before going inside, Ilya shyly asks if it is okay to say “I love you” again, and instead kisses Shane slowly and intensely on the deck. In the middle of it, they hear a sound and realize Shane’s father is inside the house, staring at them; he turns and leaves immediately.
Panicked, Shane chases to the front door but only sees his father’s car driving away. Shane and Ilya process what just happened, nervously laughing at how Shane’s careful plan to come out has been destroyed. When Ilya offers to come along for support, Shane decides he wants Ilya there, and they quickly get dressed and drive to Shane’s parents’ cottage.
Inside, Shane’s parents are clearly shaken, and Shane apologizes for how they found out. Shane tells them he is gay and introduces Ilya, struggling to define their relationship until Ilya bluntly calls them “lovers.” Shane admits they have been secretly involved since before their rookie year, which shocks his parents, though Shane’s mother reveals they had already suspected Shane was gay.
The conversation shifts from disbelief to concern about secrecy and practicality. Shane’s parents accept that the relationship cannot be public, ask whether teammates know, and discuss Ilya’s reputation and bisexuality. Ilya states he has only ever been in love with one person, and Shane echoes it, which deeply moves Shane’s mother.
Shane’s mother launches into problem-solving mode, asking about openly gay player Scott Hunter and listening as Shane shares a potential plan for Ilya to move to Canada to be closer. As Shane becomes overwhelmed, Ilya comforts him, calls himself Shane’s “boyfriend,” and Shane agrees to the label, realizing the secret is now shared with his family.
