Chapter Twelve

Overview

Ilya basks in being the villain on the road in Philadelphia, then fixates on a highlight of Shane scoring and turns it into fuel for his own obsession and competitiveness. Shane spends a rare low-key day helping Hayden with his kids, dodging another attempt to set him up and quietly confronting how impossible it feels to tell anyone the truth about his desires. By night, Ilya watches a TV profile of Shane’s “sweetheart” life and realizes his pull toward Shane is deepening into something riskier than their usual hookups.

Summary

In Philadelphia, Ilya Rozanov antagonizes an opposing player along the boards until the referee warns him off. As Ilya returns to the bench, the crowd and an opposing defenseman hurl insults at him, including a homophobic slur; Ilya brushes it off and takes perverse satisfaction in being hated on the road.

Sitting beside veteran teammate Brad Hammersmith, Ilya watches the arena screens show a highlight from Montreal vs. Ottawa: Shane Hollander scores with his trademark precision and celebrates. The sight makes Ilya unexpectedly pleased—and instantly competitive—so Ilya decides he needs to score two goals that night to answer Shane.

In Montreal, Shane visits the Biodome with his best friend and teammate Hayden Pike, who is wrangling his young children. Hayden announces that his wife, Jackie, is pregnant again, and Shane congratulates him while teasing him about already having three kids.

While the twins run to watch penguins, Hayden tries to set Shane up with Jackie’s friend Samantha. Shane refuses, insisting he does not want to date, and privately considers how complicated it would be to tell Hayden he is attracted to men—or that he has been secretly hooking up with Ilya for years—deciding it is not worth the risk.

Shane’s attempt at a quiet outing ends when two teen girls recognize him and ask for a selfie, which draws a crowd; Shane spends the next twenty minutes signing and taking photos while Hayden fumes about being ignored. Later, in Washington, Ilya lounges in his hotel room browsing a new Audi before hearing Shane’s name on ESPN. He watches a “wholesome” segment about Shane’s lake cottage and yoga, grows jealous imagining Shane’s private life, and admits to himself that each hookup has only made him want more—an attraction he knows is dangerous.
