Barbary’s New Books

Overview

Barbary uses the Book of Control to suspend Drummond helplessly, boasts about stealing the Book of Doors, and strips Drummond of his other books to expand his own collection. When Barbary learns the Bookseller is selling his stolen Book of Pain, he decides to kill her and threatens to resort to violence at her auction. The chapter pivots as an older Cassie arrives at the apartment, signaling a long-planned reckoning with Barbary.

Summary

In Drummond Fox’s apartment, Hugo Barbary taunts Drummond about a woman he has just pushed through a door, showing no concern that she may now be stranded in the past. Using the Book of Control, Barbary yanks Drummond into the air and holds him suspended, venting about his “bad day” and a swollen face.

Barbary rages that a powerful man has stolen his Book of Pain, then smugly inspects the Book of Doors he has taken. When Drummond tries to attack, Barbary anticipates the move and freezes Drummond’s arm midstrike, then spreads Drummond’s arms out and drags him through the air to hang him in front of the window.

Searching Drummond’s pockets while keeping him immobilized, Barbary confiscates Drummond’s books one by one: the Book of Memories, the Book of Luck, and the Book of Shadows. Barbary lays them with the Book of Doors on the floor, musing about building a collection to rival the feared woman who hunts books, and asks Drummond which “monster” he would prefer. Drummond needles Barbary, calling him a fool rather than frightening.

Barbary considers torturing Drummond to force out secrets, but his phone chimes and interrupts him. He discovers that the Black, bald Bookseller is selling his stolen book, and Barbary concludes he will have to kill her and anyone else who tries to take his books. Drummond warns that the Bookseller’s auctions don’t allow books, but Barbary shrugs it off and threatens to simply shoot his way through.

As Drummond, exhausted, all but invites Barbary to get it over with, the front door opens. Barbary turns just as an older Cassie steps into the living area, focused and purposeful, and announces that she has waited a long time for this confrontation.
