Izzy and Lund
Overview
Hiding out in a Midtown diner, Izzy’s fragmented memories begin returning, and she recalls that a man named Drummond made her forget to protect her and that Cassie is likely with him. Lund reveals he took the magic book dropped during Izzy’s torture and has contacted a Bookseller to sell it. With Azaki dead and Lund holding both the stolen book and Azaki’s Book of Illusion, they prepare to meet the Bookseller and turn survival into leverage.
Summary
Izzy sits in a Midtown diner with Lund and replays phone footage showing Cassie opening a door onto a Venice street. The memory feels unreal, and Izzy struggles to reconcile what she “remembers” with what she can’t fully feel, especially after the torture. As Lund eats quietly, Izzy grows anxious about whether her missing memories will return.
Over time, Izzy notices more fragments resurfacing on their own. She asks Lund what they are waiting for and worries about Cassie’s safety, fearing the torturer may have taken Cassie too. Lund reasons that if the man had Cassie, he would not have come after Izzy, which calms Izzy slightly.
Another memory clicks into place: Ben’s Deli, Cassie, and a man with an unusual name. Izzy remembers “Drummond” and realizes he was likely the one who made her forget, claiming it was to protect her. Reassured that Cassie is with Drummond, Izzy briefly feels steadier, then panics about practical consequences—especially missing work and losing her job.
Lund tells Izzy she will not need to worry about work because she is “going to be rich.” He explains that Azaki had a contact known as the Bookseller who trades in magic books, and Lund has been texting her to arrange a meeting. Lund reveals he took the purple-and-green book the torturer dropped on Izzy’s apartment floor, intending to sell it, and offers Izzy half the money because the book was taken from her home and used on her.
Izzy is shaken by the sight of the book and worries about Azaki’s body still in her apartment and what authorities might think. Lund dismisses Azaki as not truly a friend but acknowledges he was kind, then shows Izzy another volume: Azaki’s Book of Illusion, which could create convincing objects from imagination. After receiving a message, Lund announces it is time to meet the Bookseller.
