In a luxury house on the Chilean coast near Antofagasta, Hjaelmer Lund waits with Azaki for their host, Miss Pacheo, to hear the results of their search. Using the cover of being academics, Azaki and Lund have spent two days combing the Pacheo family library for a special “magic” book and found nothing, leaving Miss Pacheo quietly devastated.

As Elena translates, Azaki apologizes and prepares to leave, but the atmosphere turns heavy when Miss Pacheo begins to cry. Azaki notices black-and-white photographs of Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia and learns from Elena that Miss Pacheo has always wanted to see Spain but is too ill to travel; Azaki decides to make amends by offering Miss Pacheo a “visit.”

Outside, in the dark sand between the ocean and the desert, Azaki discreetly uses the Book of Illusion. Sand and dust swirl and condense into a massive, three-dimensional illusion of the Sagrada Familia, then Azaki adds luminous, aurora-like ribbons of color overhead; the strain makes him sweat as he sustains it. Miss Pacheo and Elena, shocked and moved, enter the cathedral together to experience it.

Driving back to Antofagasta, Azaki questions whether the gesture was foolish, admitting he is exhausted by deceiving people during fruitless searches. The narration fills in how Lund became Azaki’s quiet protector: nine months earlier in San Francisco, Lund rescued Azaki from angry men after Azaki used the Book of Illusion to cheat at cards, then accepted Azaki’s job offer after seeing the book’s impossible power.

At their hotel suite, Azaki returns from a solitary drink and announces he wants to go back to the United States—specifically New York. Before sleep, Lund asks Azaki to “do the thing,” and Azaki floods the room with rainbow sparks from the Book of Illusion, promising that tomorrow a new adventure begins.
