Izzy sits on her couch watching an unfamiliar man look out her window, worrying about the detectives who had been with him. When Izzy asks what happened, the man calmly admits he killed both detectives by shooting them in the brain and introduces himself as Dr. Hugo Barbary, claiming they met the previous night—something Izzy cannot remember.

Barbary presses Izzy about Cassie and then states what he really wants: the Book of Doors. Izzy insists she does not know what he means, and Barbary explains that Izzy is useful as leverage because Cassie will want Izzy alive. He adds that he does not care if Izzy is harmed, making clear that Izzy’s safety depends on keeping him “happy.”

Barbary says he is interested in what Izzy has forgotten and decides to “help” her remember. He forces a small, violently colored notebook into Izzy’s hands at gunpoint and reveals it is the Book of Pain, which she cannot drop without his permission. The book immediately causes escalating agony that spreads from Izzy’s hands through her body, accompanied by pulsing, unnatural colors, until Izzy loses control of her body and can no longer think.

As Izzy endures the torture, Barbary claims the pain will open “doors” in Izzy’s mind and reset her, releasing sealed memories. The pain abruptly stops, leaving Izzy shaking and terrified as Barbary demands to know whether she remembers anything. Izzy panics, tries to flee, and ends up trapped near the window as Barbary threatens another round.

A giant man suddenly appears and punches Barbary hard enough to send him crashing into the TV unit, leaving him facedown and unmoving. The giant tells Izzy she is in danger, admits he and his Japanese companion were not police, and says the Japanese man is dead; if Barbary survives, he will keep coming. He offers to take Izzy to someone who can keep her safe, and Izzy agrees as the giant orders her to wash, change, and pack quickly before more threats arrive.
