Chapter Fourteen
Overview
In the aftermath of Lowen's sleepwalking episode, Jeremy proposes locking her bedroom door from the outside at night, and Lowen agrees despite her discomfort. The moment underscores both her vulnerability and Jeremy's increasing protectiveness. As Lowen forces herself back into work and avoids a tense household atmosphere, she also chooses to keep reading Verity's manuscript, ensuring the hidden revelations will continue to shape the story.
Summary
Lowen has not slept again after the previous night, so she is exhausted and on her second cup of coffee by early morning. While watching the rain and seeing April arrive, Lowen worries Jeremy might tell April what happened when Lowen ended up in his room.
Before Lowen can avoid the kitchen, Jeremy appears and quietly asks how she would feel about him putting a lock on the outside of her bedroom door. Jeremy explains that he could lock her in after she falls asleep and open it before she wakes, so her sleepwalking cannot carry her out of the room again. Although the idea makes Lowen uneasy because it feels more extreme, she agrees because the possibility of leaving her room in her sleep scares her more.
April walks in during the conversation, and the tension is obvious to Lowen even though Jeremy acts casual. Jeremy suggests that Lowen take a break for the day because she seems shaken, but Lowen insists she would rather stay busy. She returns to Verity's office, still unable to stop thinking about the night before.
During the morning, Lowen catches up on emails and handles interviews Corey has forwarded to her about finishing Verity's series. After lunch, she starts building an outline for the seventh book from scratch because she has given up on finding one among Verity's materials. Her exhaustion and unease make the work difficult, but she keeps pushing herself.
Later, Lowen smells tacos and realizes Jeremy is making them because she requested them, a small sign of their growing intimacy. Even so, Lowen does not feel comfortable joining dinner when April and Verity will be at the table. Left alone with her thoughts, she focuses again on her fear of Verity, looks at the drawer holding the manuscript, and decides she will read one more chapter before stopping.
