Chapter Nineteen
Overview
Lowen and Jeremy's intimacy deepens when Jeremy admits that he felt a stronger connection with Lowen than he ever found with Verity. That fragile moment is shattered when they discover Lowen's bedroom has been locked from the outside, forcing Jeremy to consider Lowen's fears about Verity. Although Crew and Verity are found safe, the incident leaves Jeremy shaken and strengthens Lowen's resolve to finish the manuscript and expose what she believes is the truth.
Summary
After having sex again in the shower, Lowen and Jeremy lie awake in her bed and ask each other increasingly personal questions. Lowen admits that her last relationship was a shallow, sex-based arrangement with her agent, Corey. When Lowen asks about Jeremy's marriage, Jeremy says he loved Verity but never found the deep emotional connection he kept hoping would develop, despite their strong physical attraction and shared family life.
Jeremy then reveals that he felt something closer to that missing connection only recently, in the coffee shop bathroom with Lowen. His admission deepens Lowen's feelings for him, and the two fall asleep together. A couple of hours later, Jeremy wakes in alarm because he has overslept and does not want Crew to discover him in Lowen's room.
When Jeremy tries to leave, the bedroom door will not open. Lowen immediately recognizes that it is not jammed but locked from the outside, which revives her fear of Verity. Jeremy first assumes there must be an innocent explanation, but when Lowen asks whether he locked Verity's bedroom door the night before and suggests Verity may have trapped them and taken Crew, Jeremy begins to panic.
Jeremy breaks the window, climbs outside, and unlocks the bedroom door from the hall. He rushes to check on Crew and Verity, then returns shaken but relieved to report that both are asleep. Even with that immediate danger gone, the incident leaves Jeremy rattled and shows that Lowen's suspicions are beginning to affect him.
Moments later, April arrives and sees the tense aftermath. Jeremy leaves the house without explanation, and Lowen covers by saying he had a rough night with Crew. Alone in the office, Lowen resolves to finish Verity's manuscript that day because she now believes Jeremy needs to read it and understand how completely he failed to know his wife; Lowen ends the chapter convinced that more danger is coming.
