Lowen wakes in the dark in an upstairs bedroom and immediately realizes she is not in her own room. When she recognizes the yellow walls and the mechanical bed, she understands she has somehow sleepwalked into Verity's room and climbed into Verity's bed. Terrified, Lowen scrambles away, sees Verity beside her, and screams before fleeing into the hall, where Jeremy catches her and follows her back to her room.

In Lowen's bedroom, Jeremy tries to calm her while Lowen apologizes and explains that she sometimes sleepwalks and had taken two Xanax earlier. Jeremy realizes this is why Lowen wanted a lock on her door, and he initially tries to reassure her that sleepwalking is harmless. When Lowen was ten, she woke with a cut requiring stitches, a badly injured wrist, blood in her bed, and dirt on her feet, even though she had locked her bedroom door. Security footage later showed sleepwalking Lowen standing motionless on a porch railing for an hour, then jumping, injuring herself, showing no pain, and calmly returning to bed with no memory of it.

Lowen explains that the footage terrified her more than the injury, and that her mother responded by sending her away for a two-week psychiatric evaluation and later sleeping behind three locks because she was afraid of her own daughter. Jeremy responds with sympathy rather than fear, acknowledging how painful that rejection must have been. He promises they can make a plan in the morning and, when Lowen is too panicked to sleep alone, he lies beside her and stays awake holding her until he believes she has fallen asleep, deepening the emotional intimacy between them.
