Chapter Twenty-Two
Overview
Lowen’s discovery that Verity can move explodes into open conflict when Jeremy catches Lowen trying to expose her and assumes Lowen is attacking a helpless woman. Jeremy’s refusal to believe Lowen shatters their trust and puts Lowen at risk of losing both him and her place in the house. In desperation, Lowen gives Jeremy Verity’s manuscript, making its contents the only remaining way to prove the truth.
Summary
After finishing the manuscript’s final chapter and learning that Jeremy once suspected Verity killed Harper, Lowen is shaken and full of questions. Jeremy returns home carrying a heavily medicated Crew after the emergency room visit, and he does not check on Verity before coming downstairs. In the kitchen, Jeremy and Lowen share a quiet, intimate moment, but Lowen keeps her questions to herself while Jeremy goes upstairs to shower.
Back in the office, Lowen spills her coffee when she sees Verity on the floor, moving on her hands and knees. Lowen freezes, then screams for Jeremy, but before Lowen can record proof, Verity crawls back into bed and resumes her motionless pose. Terrified and furious, Lowen grabs a knife, runs upstairs, unlocks Verity’s room, and tries to drag Verity from the bed so Jeremy can see that Verity is faking her condition.
Jeremy arrives in the middle of the struggle and reacts with anger, believing Lowen is attacking his helpless wife. Lowen insists that Verity is pretending, but Jeremy pulls Lowen away, restores Verity to bed, locks Verity’s room, and forcibly takes Lowen downstairs. When Lowen begs him not to leave Crew upstairs near Verity, Jeremy ignores the warning because he thinks Lowen is delusional and dangerous.
In Lowen’s room, Jeremy starts packing her suitcase and orders her to leave. Lowen pleads for him to believe her, but Jeremy says Verity is practically brain-dead and accuses Lowen of imagining things since she arrived. Their conflict turns brutal when Lowen says Verity killed Harper and reminds Jeremy that he once suspected it himself.
Desperate to prove she is not lying, Lowen runs to Verity’s office, grabs the manuscript, and thrusts it at Jeremy. She begs him to read it, especially the final chapters, arguing that the pages reveal who Verity really is and that Jeremy deserves the truth for the sake of his daughters. The chapter ends with Lowen crying and pleading, knowing Jeremy may have already decided she is the one who cannot be trusted.
