Chapter Ten

Overview

Disturbed by Verity's manuscript, Lowen turns to family photos for insight and ends up sharing an intimate, grief-filled conversation with Jeremy. Jeremy reveals key truths about Chastin, Harper, and Crew, then admits he was angry at Verity after her accident because he believes she may have driven into the tree on purpose. Their growing attraction nearly leads to a kiss, but Crew's sudden, angry reaction to the photos exposes how raw the family's trauma still is.

Summary

After putting Verity's manuscript away in anger, Lowen reflects on how disturbed she is by Verity's account of motherhood. She compares Verity's coldness with Jeremy's obvious devotion to his children and tries to justify her growing obsession with learning more about Verity as research for finishing the series. Acting on that impulse, Lowen takes a box of family photographs from Verity's office to the kitchen and begins sorting through pictures of Chastin, Harper, and Crew.

As Lowen studies the photos, she thinks again about Chastin's scar and the abortion attempts described in the manuscript. Jeremy enters the kitchen, and Lowen explains that seeing the photos helps her understand Verity. Instead of objecting, Jeremy sits with her and talks about the girls. He explains that Harper was diagnosed with Asperger's and was not very expressive, while Chastin was protective, forceful, and especially attached to Crew. Jeremy says Harper was harder for others to understand, but he felt he could read her needs and emotions.

The conversation shifts to grief and its aftermath. Jeremy admits that Crew has not asked about Chastin or Harper once, and he is unsure whether that is reassuring or troubling. He says he took Crew to therapy for a few months but stopped because he feared it only kept reopening the trauma. When Lowen asks Jeremy how he is doing, Jeremy says Chastin's death shattered his world, Harper's death ended it, and Verity's later accident left him with only anger.

Jeremy then reveals that his anger was directed at Verity, making clear that he believes she may have crashed into the tree on purpose. The confession creates an intimate pause between him and Lowen. Wanting to comfort him, Lowen hugs Jeremy, and the embrace lingers until it becomes mutual and charged. They move close enough that a kiss seems imminent.

The moment is broken when Crew appears in the doorway and sees them together beside the photographs. Crew rushes to the table, frantically shoves the pictures back into the box, and begins crying. He yells at Lowen to put them away and says he does not want to see them. Jeremy carries Crew upstairs, leaving Lowen shaken by the outburst, guilty about the near-kiss, and newly desperate to escape the house and its grief.
