18. Getaway
Overview
Eve and Charlie reach a motel, but safety proves temporary because Eve's distrust and the house's distortions follow them there. After Charlie reassures Eve with intimate memories from their past, a late-night call from another Charlie claims the real Charlie is still trapped at the house and the woman beside Eve is an impostor.
When Eve sees that her companion lacks Charlie's tattoo, she stops running from the house's mystery and turns back toward it. The chapter transforms Eve's paranoia into action, raising the stakes by suggesting the threat can copy the people and animals she loves.
Summary
As Eve and Charlie drive down the mountain with Shylo, Eve remains badly shaken by what happened at the house. They stop at the Kettle Creek Motel, where an irritable clerk slowly rents them an overpriced room. Even away from the house, Eve stays hypervigilant, scanning the woods, watching a patrol car pass, and struggling to believe they are truly safe.
Inside the room, Charlie tries to calm Eve and promises they can investigate everything the next day. Eve admits she fears the same breakdown Thomas described in Alison, because objects, places, and even her phone seem to have changed. When a sudden intrusive thought tells Eve that the woman beside her is not really Charlie, Eve tests her by asking how they first met. Charlie correctly retells their meeting at a Rochester screening of Spirited Away, and the shared memory reassures Eve enough for them to embrace and briefly relax together.
Later, after Charlie falls asleep while the television plays, Eve wakes at 3:06 a.m. to Charlie's phone vibrating in her backpack. The caller ID says Eve is calling, which means someone else has Eve's phone. Eve answers in the bathroom and hears a terrified voice identical to Charlie's saying she never left the house, that the woman with Eve is an impostor, and that the dog with Eve is not the real Shylo either. The caller urges Eve to run and stay away from the false Charlie before strange approaching sounds interrupt the call.
When the Charlie from the bed appears in the bathroom doorway, Eve lies about the call. The impostor turns on the light, and Eve finally notices the missing black triangle tattoo on her left index finger. That detail confirms Eve's fear. Eve grabs the truck keys and wallet, bolts outside without shoes, and drives off as the false Charlie chases after her. Instead of escaping down the mountain, Eve decides to return to the house to save the real Charlie and Shylo. As she speeds back toward the summit, the truck warns that it is nearly out of gas.
