Eve enters Heather's tidy house to use the phone, intent on checking whether Charlie really went into town and on returning home before Thomas and his family find another reason to stay. While following Heather's directions to a rotary phone at the end of a long hallway, Eve notices the house's closed doors and dim, hotel-like corridor, which briefly heightens her unease.

Eve reaches Charlie, but the call is not reassuring. Charlie answers from a noisy place and seems confused, impatient, or disapproving when Eve asks where Charlie is and when Charlie is coming back. When Eve mentions the missing locket and says she is not okay, another indistinct voice speaks to Charlie in the background; then the call abruptly ends with a harsh beep, and Eve's attempt to call back fails, leaving Eve more worried rather than comforted.

After the call, Eve notices Heather in the hallway adjusting a family photo and is reminded of the previous night's disturbing events. Although Heather offers to listen, Eve initially tries to leave without explaining much. Before Eve exits, however, Heather asks whether the Thomas on the phone was Thomas Faust, revealing that she knew him as a child.

Heather explains that she used to babysit Thomas and thinks of herself as his honorary aunt. She says Thomas was a smart, energetic child, notes that he used to hide in the basement just as one of his children did, and is puzzled and hurt that Thomas did not come to her house for help during the storm. Sensing there is more history behind Heather's remark that Thomas turned out well "all things considered," Eve lies that Thomas mentioned Heather fondly, then decides to stay for tea, hoping to learn more about Thomas's past and perhaps hear back from Charlie.
