Eve returns from the woods cold, exhausted, and shaken, only to find herself locked out of her own house. Thomas eventually lets her in and asks whether she has reached Charlie, then explains that his family has not left because the weather is too bad and Paige is anxious about the roads. Angry that Thomas is breaking his promise to leave, Eve refuses to accept the delay and decides to get tire chains from the attic so the family can depart immediately.

As Thomas and Paige linger awkwardly downstairs and Paige thanks Eve for helping, Eve notices that the torn wallpaper hiding the dumbwaiter entrance has been neatly repaired without her permission. She pulls down the attic ladder and climbs into the cramped, foul-smelling space, where she finds old furniture, a dog crate and bowl labeled Buckley, and the narrow corridor Charlie had once mentioned. Moving deeper into the attic, Eve passes the dumbwaiter chute and reaches a small storage room where she finds the tire chains.

Before leaving, Eve notices a box labeled for donation that contains Charlie’s old camera and photography equipment. The discovery reminds Eve how important photography once was to Charlie and how Charlie abandoned it after her father died. This personal relic deepens Eve’s unease, because Charlie’s belongings have been shoved into the attic like forgotten junk.

From the attic window, Eve sees Thomas outside near the shed. Hidden from the house, Thomas suddenly screams and strikes the side of his own head in a violent outburst, then composes himself, lights a cigarette, and walks down the driveway. On the window sill, Eve also finds a carved warning: DON’T FORGET WHICH HOUSE YOU’RE IN, echoing the ominous messages she has already encountered elsewhere on the property.

As Eve prepares to leave, the dumbwaiter grinds upward on its own. When she investigates, she finds it empty but sees damp adult footprints leading away from it through the attic. Trapped between the unseen presence and the only exit, Eve tries to retreat, but her flashlight dies, the attic hatch slams shut, and she is left in darkness. The flashlight rolls back to life just long enough to reveal a tall, gaunt woman in a torn hospital gown, with a shaved head and filthy bare feet, advancing toward her in jerky stops and starts. Eve finally screams and pounds on the hatch, and when it suddenly opens beneath her, she falls down through the attic opening and smashes into the banister below.
