Darrow’s Mars Triumph turns from celebration to catastrophe. After Nero offers to adopt him and wed him to Mustang, Roque poisons Darrow and a Sovereign-backed strike led by the Jackal, Aja, Cassius, and Antonia massacres the gathering. Lorn and Nero are slain, and Fitchner’s severed head reveals he was Ares. Paralyzed, Darrow is marked for dissection as Mustang remains missing.
Summary
Darrow rides in his Triumph through Mars, crowned with laurel by a White as Augustus celebrates victory and raises a floating obelisk for the fallen. Mustang’s absence and Fitchner’s no-show unsettle him. In the Citadel’s throne room, Augustus chastises Darrow for arming Obsidians, expounds a ruthless philosophy of order, and offers to make Darrow his heir and husband to Virginia. Calculating, Darrow kneels and accepts.
At the understated garden feast for the Triumph Mask, Darrow mingles with Lorn and Victra while Sevro departs to look for the missing Fitchner. Roque arrives to present the Mask, but Darrow recognizes “Pinks” as disguised Gold infiltrators—Vixus and Lilath. Roque quietly pricks Darrow with a poisoned ring, paralyzing him as Antonia shoots Victra and murders her mother. Lilath ambushes Lorn; the Jackal coldly finishes him.
Praetorians and Obsidians descend from a stealthed ship. Aja and Cassius take command, hunting survivors. Cassius condemns Darrow, steals his wolf ring, and cites the Sovereign’s order for dissection, refusing to kill him. The Jackal mocks Darrow and turns to Augustus, who is restrained.
The Jackal reveals he engineered Claudius’s death as a child, shattering Augustus, who disowns him. Defying Aja’s protest, the Jackal executes Augustus with a scorcher. With responders converging and Telemanus craft streaking in, Aja pushes for extraction. Victra, gravely wounded, apologizes to Darrow.
Roque shows Darrow the contents of the Mask box: Fitchner’s severed head, revealing he was Ares and is dead. Paralyzed and surrounded by enemies, Darrow realizes their cause is in ruins as he is prepared to be taken for dissection and Mustang remains missing.
