Chapter 13
Overview
Mallory secretly installs a baby monitor in Teddy's room to catch the source of the disturbing drawings, but what she witnesses is far worse than ordinary misbehavior. During Quiet Time, the feed distorts, Teddy appears to respond to an unseen presence, and Mallory finds him in a trance behind a mysteriously blocked door and inside a room filled with a powerful urine smell. Teddy insists the drawings usually exist only in dreams, and Mallory's final observation that he was drawing with the wrong hand strengthens her belief that some outside force is involved.
Summary
At lunch the next day, Mallory goes into the Maxwells' basement and finds a baby monitor among the unpacked boxes. She takes the camera and receiver upstairs, waits until Teddy is distracted by lunch, and hides the camera in Teddy's stuffed animals so she can watch his room during Quiet Time. Mallory hopes the monitor will show how the disturbing drawings are appearing.
After Teddy goes upstairs, Mallory watches the live feed from the den. At first she sees Teddy normally preparing to draw on his bed, arranging pencils and sharpening one. Then the video begins freezing and distorting while the audio continues, and Mallory hears Teddy softly speaking to someone outside the frame. The static grows worse, Teddy's image warps unnaturally, and he whispers warnings like "Careful" and "Gently" before Mallory sees him convulsing on the bed.
Because the monitor suggests Teddy is in danger, Mallory runs upstairs and tries to open his bedroom door, but it will not budge. She pounds on it, kicks it, and hurts herself trying to force it open. When she looks through the gap under the door, a blast of concentrated ammonia and urine smell makes her gag and collapse in the hallway. Only after a click in the knob does the door finally open.
Inside, the room still reeks, but Teddy seems unaware of both the odor and Mallory's panic. He sits on the bed rapidly drawing, ignoring her until she touches him. When Teddy finally looks up, his eyes are rolled completely white, yet his hand keeps moving. Mallory grabs his wrist and is startled by his heat and unnatural strength; then Teddy's eyes snap back, and he suddenly seems like himself again.
Questioned by Mallory, Teddy says he does not know who the girl in the drawings is and insists he did not make the pictures. He explains that he sometimes dreams he and Anya draw together, but when he wakes there are usually no drawings. Seeing multiple pages in the room, Mallory realizes she may have interrupted a pattern in which Anya removes the pictures before Teddy wakes, sparing him from seeing them. She comforts Teddy, but the chapter ends with a crucial new clue: the drawing in progress was made with Teddy's right hand, even though Mallory knows Teddy is left-handed.
