Chapter 26
Overview
Mallory confronts Ted and Caroline with the contradictions she has uncovered, including Mitzi’s clue that “Anya” means “mommy,” Teddy’s missing records, and the lie about Barcelona. When Mallory accuses them of stealing Teddy and constructing a false identity for the child, the Maxwells drop all pretense and attack her. During the struggle, Caroline’s angel-wings tattoo and Ted’s stun gun confirm that the drawings have been pointing to the Maxwells all along.
Summary
After waiting until Teddy is asleep, Mallory goes into the house to confront Ted and Caroline before Russell takes her away in the morning. The den is still filled with her sketches, and she notices painting supplies that suggest the Maxwells are preparing to erase evidence. While Ted insists on serving her foul-smelling ginkgo tea, Mallory studies two overlooked drawings near an electrical outlet and realizes the angel appears to be using a Vipertek stun gun on Anya.
Mallory begins testing the Maxwells with what she has learned. She reveals that Mitzi tried to text her that Anya was not a name, then explains that anya is Hungarian for “mommy.” She also challenges their story about Barcelona by pointing out Teddy claims he has never been on an airplane, and Ted offers an implausible explanation about accidentally giving Teddy a double dose of Benadryl for the flight.
Mallory then confronts them directly: Teddy was born female. Caroline frames this as supporting a transgender child and says Teddy chose a boy’s name, but Mallory is no longer convinced. As she rethinks Teddy’s behavior, the school’s demands for records, and the missing vaccination paperwork, Mallory concludes that Ted and Caroline never lived in Barcelona at all and have stolen a little girl, disguised her as a boy, and built a false identity around her.
Realizing she is confronting the wrong people and needs to go to Detective Briggs instead, Mallory tries to leave. Caroline calmly calls Ted’s name, and Ted smashes a wine bottle over Mallory’s head. Bleeding and disoriented, Mallory crawls toward her phone, hoping to reach its emergency button, while Ted and Caroline argue about finding the stun gun.
Caroline approaches without sympathy, treating Mallory like a problem to be cleaned up. Mallory fights back despite her injury: she kicks Caroline’s shin hard enough to bring her down, bites her arm, and tears the back of her dress. In that struggle, Mallory sees Caroline’s back tattoo: a pair of feathered angel wings, matching the angel imagery in the drawings. Ted returns holding the Vipertek stun gun and advances on Mallory as the chapter cuts off.
