Chapter 20
Overview
After losing her job, Mallory spirals into shame and isolation, but she resists the pull of relapse because she cannot leave Teddy without saying goodbye. Russell offers rescue and support, while Caroline tries to smooth the transition with a farewell invitation. The chapter then shifts the pressure onto Mallory’s hidden history when Adrian takes her back to South Philadelphia and forces a reckoning that ends with Mallory on the verge of a full confession.
Summary
Back in her cottage after being fired, Mallory gets a call from Russell, who has already seen Caroline’s photos of the drawings on the den walls. Mallory insists she is not using drugs and says a presence in the house first targeted Teddy and is now coming after her, but Russell clearly doubts her explanation and urges her to go to a recovery meeting or find someone to stay with. When Mallory has no one to turn to, Russell decides to cut short his trip and promises that he and Doreen will pick her up on Monday so she can stay with him and figure out what comes next.
Alone in the cottage during a thunderstorm, Mallory feels trapped, ashamed, and dangerously tempted by the idea of returning to her old life in Philadelphia, where she could easily find drugs and people who would welcome her back. She has enough money to leave immediately, but she cannot bring herself to go because Teddy would miss her. Mallory decides she has to stay long enough to say goodbye and make sure Teddy knows none of what happened was his fault.
On Saturday morning, Mallory finds a note from Caroline explaining that Ted and Caroline have taken Teddy to the shore after telling him Mallory is moving away. Caroline also says Russell has booked a flight and invites Mallory to a farewell afternoon with the family on Sunday. Mallory discovers she no longer has access to the house, feels too humiliated to leave the backyard, and drifts through the day in isolation until Adrian appears at her cottage and tells her they need to talk somewhere else.
Adrian drives Mallory across the bridge into South Philadelphia and stops in front of the rowhouse where she grew up, showing that he has investigated her background and is forcing her to confront the life she tried to hide. Distressed, Mallory refuses to stay there and directs him to FDR Park instead. Sitting by the lake, Adrian says he had searched for her online from the beginning, believed her scholarship story because parts of it were true, and was drawn to the mystery around her, but now realizes she was concealing something important. Mallory admits she lied only about her past and not about Teddy’s drawings or her feelings for Adrian, and when Adrian gives her space to explain, Mallory finally prepares to tell him the truth.
