Chapter 24
Overview
Mallory’s attempt to get answers from Mrs. Campbell collapses, forcing her to abandon outside leads and focus entirely on Spring Brook. At Adrian’s urging, Mallory lets herself become Anya’s possible medium again, and the result is a burial nightmare and a nearly black drawing that seems to represent the grave itself. The chapter pushes the mystery closer to Anya’s death while also deepening Mallory’s emotional and physical trust in Adrian.
Summary
Mallory follows her new lead by calling Rest Haven Akron to ask about Mrs. Campbell, hoping the elderly woman can confirm details about Dolores, Aunt Jean, or an inheritance. Jalissa Bell, Mrs. Campbell’s caregiver, explains that Mrs. Campbell has late-stage dementia and cannot reliably answer questions, and Jalissa refuses to share private information. Although Jalissa invites Mallory to visit during visiting hours, the trip is too long and Mallory realizes she has no time to chase another uncertain lead.
Because the Maxwells must be convinced soon, Mallory decides the answer has to be in Spring Brook. She and Adrian have dinner in town and postpone saying good night because both know Mallory may soon lose her place there. Adrian promises to keep seeing her and suggests that, since Teddy is away and Anya needs a living medium to draw, Mallory should deliberately give Anya another chance to work through her.
They buy a sketch pad, pencils, and a Sharpie at Walgreens, then return to the cottage. The mood is awkwardly intimate: instead of preparing for sex, they are preparing for a possible supernatural episode. Adrian sets up to keep watch while Mallory goes to bed, and Mallory falls asleep more peacefully than she has in a long time.
During the night, Mallory dreams she is being dragged through the Enchanted Forest and dumped into a hole. From inside the grave, Mallory sees a man looking down at her, hears him apologize, and feels him throw in a stuffed bunny, a bear, and a ball before shoveling dirt over her body. The dream strongly echoes Anya’s death and burial, giving Mallory a visceral new image of what happened.
Mallory wakes at 3:03 a.m. holding a broken pencil and finds Adrian asleep shirtless on the floor beside her bed after staying all night to protect her. Adrian shows her what she drew in her sleep: a page almost completely covered in dark graphite scribbles, with only two tiny white gaps where the pencil tore through the paper. Adrian wonders if the drawing means Anya has finished her sequence and that the black mass represents dirt from the grave, but Mallory still feels that something important is missing. As the tension between them finally gives way to desire and trust, Mallory asks Adrian to leave the floor and join her in bed.
