Mallory wakes in her cottage tied to a chair and gagged, with her arms bound behind her back. She forces herself to calm down with a rehab breathing exercise, notices that it is 11:07, and thinks about surviving long enough for Adrian, who is expected around midnight, to notice something is wrong. Before she can act, Caroline enters wearing gloves and carrying a tote filled with a spoon, a lighter, a syringe, and heroin.

After removing the gag, Caroline coldly explains the story she plans to leave behind: Mallory supposedly relapsed, stole heroin from Mitzi, overdosed on fentanyl-laced drugs, and will be found dead in bed the next morning. Mallory realizes Caroline is rehearsing a cover story built around Mallory's addiction history. When Mallory accuses Caroline of being the winged figure from Teddy's drawings and of stealing Teddy after killing his mother, Caroline first calls it self-defense and insists that she "rescued" the child.

To buy time, Mallory keeps Caroline talking and points her toward Teddy's drawings, hoping Adrian will arrive before Caroline injects her. Caroline gives in and tells her version of the past. She says that after years of infertility, she and Ted left Manhattan for Seneca Lake, where she became fixated on a Hungarian artist named Margit Baroth and Margit's little daughter, Flora. After seeing Flora wander away while chasing a rabbit, Caroline followed the child, took her into the woods, struck Margit with a Viper when Margit confronted her, and then killed Margit while Ted later buried the body and the child's belongings; hearing Flora's name makes Mallory realize the old spirit-board message was not "HELP FLOWER" but "HELP FLORA."

Caroline continues the confession by explaining that she and Ted disguised Flora as a boy, renamed the child Teddy, fled to Gilbert, West Virginia, and slowly remade the terrified toddler into their son. Caroline says Margit's spirit later began appearing to Teddy as a woman in white and followed the family even after they moved again. She admits that she hired Mallory as a third-party distraction because Mallory was energetic, vulnerable, and easy to discredit, and she also admits that when Mitzi became frightened by warnings from the spirit board, she and Ted restrained Mitzi, gave her a fatal overdose, and staged the scene to look like drug abuse.

When Caroline notices Mallory repeatedly checking the clock, she stops talking and prepares the injection. Mallory begs and warns Caroline that she will live with the guilt forever, but Caroline calmly ties off Mallory's arm and injects the fentanyl-laced heroin into her vein. Caroline leaves the cottage in darkness, and as Mallory feels herself slipping away, she prays for forgiveness and sees Margit waiting in the shadows.
