The chapter focuses on a dragon named Everen caught in the midst of a war involving the Veil, dragons, humans, magical creatures called wraiths, and a storm.
Everen fights against the wraiths trying to keep the half-open Veil from fully opening or closing.
Everen's mother and other dragons are also engaged in the battle, but they are injured and half-trapped in the Veil.
Everen's mother is adamant about the dragons inheriting the world, and is ready to pay the price of a human's death. But Everen is trying to find another solution, hoping to save both worlds and those she loves.
Everen is attacked by arrows from humans who are part of the Order and also faces an incoming army on horseback from Vatra.
Everen is trying to close the Veil, but her mother insists she kill a human to let the dragons through. Everen, however, knows that doing so would result in the destruction of both worlds.
Everen has the ability to see the future, and is tortured by visions of dragons burning and humans dying, and two worlds that seem doomed.
The chapter ends with Everen sacrificing herself to close the Veil, healing the rent between the worlds and keeping the dragon and human worlds separate, despite her mother's wishes.
Throughout the chapter, Everen communicates with someone, we assume an unnamed human, via magic. Everen returns some magic to this human and, despite their hatred for each other, feels a deep bond and has a shared fate with the human.
As Everen falls into the storm, she feels an imminent peace, accepts her fate, and the bond between her and the human snaps. But she's left with a final message within the storm: "Deep sutures make the strongest scars".
