Chapter 18: Freya
Overview
As Freya and Bjorn prepare to flee, Saga confirms they must leave immediately, but a sudden vision changes the meaning of their plan. Saga foresees Snorri uniting Skaland and bringing devastating war to Nordeland in Freya’s name unless Freya severs herself from his control. The prophecy convinces Freya that running will not stop the coming conflict and drives her toward the dangerous decision to cut Snorri’s thread despite the blood oath binding her.
Summary
After the previous night, Freya commits to leaving with Bjorn because it seems safer than staying, even though she no longer believes she can fully trust him or herself around him. Freya asks Saga whether Harald will try to stop them, and Saga says Harald will argue but obey her judgment. Although Freya offers to delay out of pity for what this separation will cost Bjorn and Saga, Saga refuses, warning that any delay could ruin everything and urging them to leave immediately and start laying a false trail before Snorri can sail.
Saga’s resolve breaks when she says goodbye to Bjorn, showing how painful the sacrifice is for her. Before she can finish blessing their departure, she is seized by a vision. Bjorn steadies his mother and tells Freya there is nothing to do except wait for the prophecy.
In the vision, Saga describes a false king from Skaland sailing on darkness, uniting the clans through lies, and bringing death in a war tied to Freya’s fate. She says widows, orphans, and slaughter will follow unless Freya cuts her thread free from the false king’s control and weaves a new destiny. When the vision ends, Saga is devastated and warns that Snorri is coming for Freya.
Freya realizes that escaping south will not stop the future Snorri has already built around her name. Bjorn argues that the invasion may still be far off and urges Freya to continue the plan, saying Snorri does not understand the full extent of her powers and may not be able to force Skaland into total war quickly. But Freya concludes that hiding, fleeing, or even dying will not prevent Snorri from using her as a banner for vengeance against Harald and Nordeland. Remembering Saga’s warning that fate can change only through an unthinkable choice, Freya finally identifies the forbidden path she has avoided because of her blood oath and declares that she must cut Snorri’s thread.
