Chapter 49: Bjorn
Overview
Steinunn’s vision publicly exposes Harald as Snorri’s murderer and a child of Loki, instantly shifting Grindill’s anger away from Bjorn and Freya and toward the real enemy. Freed by Leif, Bjorn helps redirect the city toward evacuation and a hunt for Harald, but Harald escapes the burning fortress by staying out of reach.
The chapter also destroys Skade’s belief that she is Harald’s heir, and Geir kills her before she can strike Gyda. By the end, Harald remains missing, Freya has disappeared inside the chaos, and Bjorn’s priorities narrow from vengeance to finding her before it is too late.
Summary
Steinunn’s final vision shows Harald confessing to Bjorn in the prison beneath Grindill. Harald boasts that he remade himself through many identities, that the public king was only his greatest disguise, and that he consumed Snorri. When the vision ends, the crowd understands that Snorri was murdered and that Harald is not their true king but a child of Loki, which turns their horror and grief into rage.
The revelation is immediately followed by chaos as smoke fills the square and Grindill burns. Leif removes Bjorn’s gag and frees him from the execution restraints, then confronts Bjorn about killing their father after believing he had attacked their mother. Bjorn admits the truth, and Leif accepts that Harald manipulated them all. Bjorn urges Leif to evacuate the city and treat Freya and her army as allies, while Bjorn tells the Unfated that Harald can wear any face and that Tora is magically bound to defend him against her will.
As draug warriors help civilians flee, Ylva publicly confirms that Freya is not the enemy. Bjorn rallies those able to fight to hunt Harald, and Gyda points out the danger of pursuing a shapeshifter in a panicked crowd. Bjorn decides that Harald will likely stay close to Tora for protection. While searching through the smoke, Bjorn notices that Freya has stationed Skoll and Hati at the gates to sniff those escaping, a strategy that may expose Harald despite his stolen forms.
Bjorn eventually spots Tora with an unfamiliar man in a dead-end passage and attacks at once, killing the man with his axe. The man proves to be only one of the Nameless, and Skade reveals the encounter was a trap by shooting Bjorn through the shoulder from above. While Bjorn distracts Skade with questions, she claims she is Harald’s trueborn daughter and rightful heir. Gyda then exposes that claim as false, explaining that the real Harald fled before Skade was born and that the creature Skade serves only stole his face. When Skade turns her weapon on Gyda, Geir drops from the roof and kills Skade, taking revenge for his mother.
After Skade’s death, Tora insists that she truly does not know where Harald has gone. Geir reports that Freya rushed into the city to rescue Bjorn but is now missing, and the wolves have not found Harald. Realizing Harald has slipped away and that Freya may be in danger, Bjorn orders Geir and the draug to keep hunting the Nameless by the brands on their tongues. Bjorn then runs to find Freya, collides with Guthrum, and demands Kaja’s help to locate her.
