Chapter 5: Bjorn

Overview

While Freya and Tora are being attacked at sea by orcas controlled through Njord’s blood, Bjorn identifies the Islunder magic-users behind the assault and storms the beach to stop them. Revealing himself as the Firehand, he cuts through their defenses, forces the child of Njord to release the whales, and kills him. Arkyn is then struck down by Tora’s lightning, leaving Freya and Tora alive and proving that Bjorn and Tora remain crucial counters to Islunder magic as the battle continues.

Summary

As a pod of orcas closes in on Freya and Tora, Bjorn tries to swim to them, but Harald stops him long enough for Bjorn to see that Freya has wrapped Tora in a silver shield of magic. Bjorn then realizes the attack is being directed from shore by two Islunder unfated men, including a child of Njord who is forcing the whales to keep striking. Furious that the creatures are being enslaved to kill Freya because of the prophecy surrounding her, Bjorn turns back toward the beach.

Onshore, Bjorn ignores the wounded Skade and Steinunn’s attempts to rouse her, takes up a shield, and charges through the battle toward the magic-users. Because the Islunders believe Skade and Tora are Harald’s only real answers to their power, they are unprepared when Bjorn calls on Tyr and summons his flaming axe. Revealed as the Firehand, Bjorn cuts through the guards protecting the spellcasters, burning and maiming anyone in his path.

Arkyn counters with lightning, but Bjorn withstands the attack, wounds Arkyn, and pursues the child of Njord before the man can escape. Bjorn throws his axe, severs the man’s leg, and forces him to release the whales by pressing Tyr’s burning blade to his throat. Once Bjorn sees the orcas break away from Freya and Tora, he kills the child of Njord anyway, judging him dishonorable for abusing his divine blood to enslave sea-creatures.

When Bjorn turns back, Arkyn is still alive and preparing another lightning strike despite his wound. Before Bjorn can finish him, a blackened hole suddenly appears in Arkyn’s chest. Looking to the water, Bjorn sees that Tora, now conscious beside Freya, has used lightning to kill Arkyn from afar. Reassured that Freya and Tora are both alive, Bjorn heads toward the village, where the larger battle is still raging.
